The early detection of Scoliosis in children is vital. Being a mother myself now I regularly find myself asking my 4 year old to bend down so that I can check his spine is straight! It’s a bit more difficult to get my 17 month old baby to stay still for more than a second!
As Scoliosis usually becomes apparent in children from the age of 8 to adolescent, it’s important for parents to be aware of a range of indicators:

  • prominent shoulder blades
  • uneven waist
  • uneven hips
  • leaning to one side

My mother detected my Scoliosis when I was tying my shoelace and wearing a white top. As I bent over she noticed that my rib-cage was very prominent. If any of these signs become apparent to you then it would be recommended to take your child to the GP.

In the United States, about half of the states require public schools to test for scoliosis. It’s an easy test called the forward-bending test, and it doesn’t hurt at all. It involves bending over, with straight knees, and reaching your fingertips toward your feet or the floor. Then, a doctor or nurse will look at your back to see if your spine curves.

Don’t you wish they did that in the UK??
